London brewing resurgent
London: home to Big Ben, St Paul’s and Elizabeth II, but not so much brewers. In recent years Young’s, Diageo/Guinness and A-B InBev have shuttered industrial-scale landmarks, seemingly leaving only Fuller’s and Meantime Brewery to maintain the capital’s illustrious brewing heritage.
But London’s brewing scene is quietly resurgent. Britain’s microbrewery boom has arrived with a vengeance. Start-ups such as Sambrook’s, Camden Town Brewery, Redemption, The Kernel and Zero Degrees are invigorating the city’s taste buds.
This resurgence is to be brought into sharper focus with this month for the first ever collaborative show, open to both the trade and consumers. The London Brewers Showcase draws together 15 brewers, including Fuller’s and Meantime.
The Showcase is backed by the London Brewers Alliance, itself a new organisation dedicated to promoting the quality and image of beer in the city.
Phil Lowry, a part-time brewer at Brew Wharf and managing director of beermerchants.com, prompted the creation of the LBA.
“Over the last century many large breweries left the city and some closed down entirely. Now, in just the last decade, new brewers have started to emerge, crafting exceptional ales, stouts and lagers and using traditional London porter recipes,” commented Lowry.
“The London Brewers Alliance was formed to help get the word out there. We hope that this showcase will allow both the trade and consumer to get excited about the city’s new beers for themselves.”
LBA members are celebrating their camaraderie by unveiling a collaborative beer at the Showcase. The London Beer Alliance’s London Porter is based on a traditional recipe with all the brewers contributing to the final product.
The London Brewers Showcase is set for 17th September at Brew Wharf in south London, with an exclusive trade session. Tickets are still available for this tasting – to register for the event visit http://londonbrewerstradesession.eventbrite.com
